The Doorway Decision
A ninety-second practice for the moment before any room.
The Doorway Decision is a ninety-second practice performed at any threshold — before a meeting, before a stage, before a hard conversation, before a call home. Four steps: notice, name, choose, cross. Coined and taught by Adrian Provost in the keynote Lift the Room.
The four steps
- Notice
What state am I about to bring into this room?
Fifteen seconds of unfiltered honesty with yourself. Not the state you want to be in. The state you are in.
- Name
What is this room actually for?
Not the agenda. The job of this room.
- Choose
What state does the room need from me?
Not the state you feel. The state the room requires. This is the decision.
- Cross
Enter as the person you chose to be, not the person you woke up as.
Physical: touch the threshold. Breathe once. Cross.
Why the practice works
Because the moment before is the only moment you still control. Once you are in the room, the room is running the meeting. The Doorway Decision uses ninety seconds of ownership before you spend the next ninety minutes reacting.
Where the practice comes from
The Doorway Decision is taught in the keynote Lift the Room, delivered by Adrian Provost — a keynote speaker based in Atlanta, GA, brand LEVEL, broker/owner of Realty ONE Group Terminus, and founder of Carmine Ruddy. Read the full keynote.
